Daniel S. Kuny is Fire Chief for the Hampton Township Volunteer Fire Department #1. Chief Kuny oversees the operations of the Fire / Rescue Department, which consists of Fire Officers, Firefighters, Rescue Technicians, EMT’s and Fire Police Officials. In addition to the operational responsibilities of the Department, Chief Kuny has 20 years of fire service experience and training and is committed to serve and protect the community he lives in.
Chief Kuny was elected Chief for the first time in January of 2013, he is now in his forth year as a Fire Chief in Hampton Township. He had previously held the positions of 1st and 3rd Lieutenant and State Certified Firefighter I / Rescue Technician with the Department. His volunteer work as a firefighter began in 1995 when he joined both Edgewood and Swissvale Volunteer Fire Departments, and later joined Hampton Volunteer Fire Department #1 ten years later in 2005 after moving to the area.
Chief Kuny’s interest in firefighting began as a young child, when he would hear his community volunteer fire department siren go off, he would jump on his bike and race down to see the fire engines leaving the station. This admiration has grown into a personal commitment of serving and protecting the community he lives in, and as Chief he continuously seeks to improve morale and inspire new recruits to take on the challenges and commitment of being a volunteer firefighter.
When Chief Kuny is not volunteering, he continues to excel in his 15 year career as an ASE Certified Master Automotive Technician. He is also a Veteran of the US Air Force and was deployed over seas for combat duty in the Gulf War. In his leisure time, he enjoys riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and participating in fund raisers for his motorcycle club, Fire and Iron, which to date has raised over $55,000 for the West Penn Hospital annual Burn Camp and the Mercy Hospital burn unit.
